WIDGET WORTH WATCHING!

I am finding that the phrase "necessity is the mother of invention" is holding true throughout the ages. Little by little I am learning to take advantage of the incredible information here on Active Rain.

I have toyed with the idea of adding widgets to my sidebar for some time. I stormed over to my profile's edit bar and clicked. I knew nothing. I gave it a try with our company logo and well, I actually got the logo in there but what a mess it looked like! Yuk.

I was continually annoyed at the mess on my sidebar till I found a reason to care about the sidebar today!

I had a slight interest in widgets, like knowing who's looking at my posts or maybe waving at them when they were there but I never felt like it was "NECESSARY" until today.

Today, I found the reason to go the extra mile to learn "HOW TO". I went to our faithful "SEARCH" and typed in "add widgets to sidebar" and just as I suspected...up came every helpful "HOW TO" post ever written on this subject from many of our AR Stars.

Thank you for all the helpful posts. . I read two of the posts and proceeded to my Profile to Edit like a Pro!

I removed the awful logo with messy code and added what I felt really belonged there. I am hoping each and every person on this site will add this to their profiles.

It's simple and easy and could save our children's lives. Please everyone...Add the Amber Alert!

Yes, they do ask for a donation but it is minimal. It's not required so load this in hopes of a great future!

This, my friends, is a widget worth loading! Thank you for your support. We must protect our children. Bless you!

LEARN HOW TO LEARN...ANYTHING...ON ACTIVE RAIN...

Several of Deb's Buddies have been asking, "Deb, how did you do that?" Please keep in mind that Deb does not really know what Deb is doing. Deb simply knows that Active Rain is awesome!

Active Rain is comprised of many of the most talented and brilliant "computer gurus" alive today!  How does Deb know this you ask? Because up till a few measly months ago Deb didn't know the difference between Software and Hardware. Period. Not a clue. And, not much of an exaggeration.

Active Rain taught Deb how to Copy and Paste. Really! That was a major feat!

Today, she is (very amateurishly I might add) creating some pretty cool stuff! She is creating rough HTML (messy yes) but straying away from the WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) tab in to a more technical world! Photobucket

That was her then but this is ME now!

I am confident that I can LEARN HOW TO LEARN...ANYTHING...ON ACTIVE RAIN...

I am not coming in to do a "how to" post. Not me. I am not proficient enough in any one area to do so. I still don't know how they get the screen grabs to show you where to click on the screen.

Enough of what Deb doesn't know. Here's a peek at what Deb does know.

If you want to know...ANYTHING COMPUTER OR SOFTWARE RELATED...go to SEARCH. Right here. Active Rain Search. Type in what you want to learn. Voila, it won't just Rain, it will pour information. Easy to follow perfection.

I'll go try screen grabs. Okay, the first on the list is by Andy Gordon. I will try his instructions.

I did it! It literally took me 3 minutes...three minutes and I have learned something new and expanded my horizons!

ACTIVE RAIN FRIENDSHIPS ARE BLOOMING LIKE WILDFLOWERS!

The Texas Real Estate Group was recently adopted by Marchel Peterson of Spring, Texas and Liz Carter of Katy/Houston. The group is now blooming like Texas Wildflowers! We are turning into a "Community" in the true sense of the word. Our first meeting in Bandera, Texas was recent and we had a wonderful time. We met, talked AR, ate, ate, and ate.

My husband, Scott Brooks and I turned a 5 1/2 hour drive into an 8 hour drive home because of all the gorgeous wildflowers! I would point, say ooh, awe, and off the road he would go! I am pleased to share these pictures of our trip home. I also want to say...

Thank You to The Texas Real Estate Groupfor challenging us in the quest for quality local information. Localism and our readers will benefit! Please enjoy the show!

This was taken in good old Huntsville, Texas. The Hot Spot in Texas to view wildflowers.  Our interstates are blanketed with color. When April rolls around, don't miss the exciting colors and natures ability to paint our world! No one needs to wear rose colored glasses. This is just the most beautiful sight your naked eyes can enjoy!

Fact Fact Sheet: The Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007

1:05 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all for coming. Welcome to the White House. Im pleased to sign a bill that will help homeowners who are struggling with rising mortgage payments. The Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007 will protect families from higher taxes when they refinance their homes. It will help hardworking Americans take steps to avoid foreclosure during a period of uncertainty in the housing market. I want to thank members of Congress for getting this bill passed. I appreciate it very much. Its been a joy working with you.

President I thank my Secretary of the Treasury, Hank Paulson; and the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Alphonso Jackson, for taking the lead in helping people stay in their homes. I particularly want to thank the Chairman of the Finance Committee, Max Baucus; Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan; and Senator George Voinovich of Ohio, for sponsoring this legislation.

I remember calling you on the phone, telling you that Im going to propose the same thing you are -- talked to George, as well -- and its been a joy to work with you.

I want to thank Jim McCrery of the House, Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Rob Andrews. Appreciate you all being here.

I want to thank the staff who works hard at the Treasury and HUD to make this deal work. Appreciate your hard work.

In recent months, our nations housing market has faced serious strains. Home values have fallen in many parts of our country. At the same time, many homeowners with adjustable rate mortgages have seen their monthly payments increase faster than their ability to pay. And now some homeowners face the prospect of foreclosure.

My administration has taken strong steps to help homeowners avoid foreclosure by making it easier to refinance loans. We gave the Federal Housing Administration greater flexibility to refinance loans for struggling homeowners. We helped assemble a private sector group of lenders, loan servicers, investors, and mortgage counselors called the HOPE NOW Alliance. This group has agreed on a set of industry-wide standards to help those with subprime loans refinance or modify their mortgages, so more families can stay in their homes.

The bill I sign today will help this effort by ensuring that refinancing a mortgage does not result in a higher tax bill. Under current law, if the value of your house declines and your bank or lender forgives a portion of your mortgage, the tax code treats the amount forgiven as money that can be taxed. And of course, this makes a difficult situation even worse. When youre worried about making your payments, higher taxes are the last thing you need to worry about. So this bill will create a three-year window for homeowners to refinance their mortgage and pay no taxes on any debt forgiveness that they receive. And its a really good piece of legislation. The provision will increase the incentive for borrowers and lenders to work together to refinance loans -- and it will allow American families to secure lower mortgage payments without facing higher taxes.

With this bill, Congress has taken a strong step to address the turbulence in the housing market. Yet theres more work to be done. The Congress needs to pass legislation permitting state and local governments to issue tax-exempt bonds for refinancing existing home loans. Congress needs to pass legislation strengthening the independent regulator of government sponsored enterprises like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, so we can keep them focused on the mission to expand home ownership. Congress needs, as well, to complete work on responsible legislation modernizing the Federal Housing Administration, so that we can give the FHA the necessary flexibility to help hundreds of thousands of additional families qualify for prime-rate financing.

By taking these steps, we can help our homeowners -- and well help more Americans become home owners. We want people to have a place they can call their own. After all, its an essential part of the American Dream. And we want that dream to extend throughout our nation.

I want to thank the members for joining us. I wish you all happy holidays. And this is going to make a happy holiday for many home owners. Thanks for coming.

END

So Iconic It's Almost Ironic!

Active Rain has announced a new way to personalize our blog sites. How wonderful is that? They are providing the platform that allows us to point and click our way to our own personalities. I have been scouring the new "looks" of the net and they are SO Iconic it's almost ironic!

Of course they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words". I want to point out that many of my friends and yours are choosing their styles for their blog sites! These styles actually give a strong indication of the personality you are dealing with. I just love it. It's almost like reading palms or auras! How awesome.

These examples are just a few of the blog skins popping up and are just the tip of the iceberg!

The Art Of Marketing You - marti garaughty is giving us all a step by step lesson plan.  This helped me to set up my own blog skin. It is truly not as difficult as it may seem. Thanks Marti for all the help! Your blog skin shows your amazing design capabilities and style!

Julie Neerings. I find Julie as delicate as a flower, talented as a star yet strong as a rock. She chose the rock to stand on. Good choice Julie. The symbolism shows strength with understanding. She's a steadfast professional and loyal friend.

Jason Crouch. Jason, for now, leaves it alone.  Why? Well, why not? His words speak volumes and there are no pictures needed. Jason stands for family, stability, friendship, honesty, values, standards and hard work.

Melissa Grant: Melissa shows us her sunny side. We see the blue of her skies, the dolphins dancing in the water and the smile on her face. She is welcoming, warm and expresses her huge heart and personality perfectly. Her character shows no boundaries for caring.

Marchel Peterson. Marchel is a true professional and loves her area. She is able to make her area sound and look like the only place to be. She convinces me! I wish you could hear her laugh. She brightens a room.

Tom Plant: Tom shows a gorgeous shoreline within a mountainous region. Water that never ends and a shoreline that seems endless too. This, I believe, shows Tom's ever-open heart and personality. Tom seems at home wherever he happens to be.

Adam Waldman: Strictly bidness. Otherwise called business. Relocation, big smile, and an enigma when it comes to knowing who he is. He shows his professional side most of the time yet his sweet side emerges occasionally too! No background. It's all up front.

Marey Hoeppner: What a gal! She is a great parent, writer and Virtual Assistant. Marey is just beginning a new group for story tellers. Her background is artistic, with much hidden meaning in the rain. She has just begun a new group I would love for all to join called "The Storytellers in the Rain"and please join us for some freedom and fun. Marey has just begun the first of a series of "short stories" so you should visit soon!

Missy Caulk: Missy is very multi-faceted. Her blog skin shows that she is heavily involved with her Community and is a lover of sports. If you delve a bit deeper you will find a lover of technology and the patience to make it work. The colors show support of her team and the bright side of her personality.

Brad Anderson: Brad shows his style and talent with exactly the perfect iconic symbol. A bridge is exactly what Brad offers all of us struggling to cross over to the land of understanding in the world of computers and technology. Thank you Brad. You have taught so many so much!

TLW: The Lovely Wife's Crap a Rama! When you need to smile or simply feel like you're visiting a friend check out her posts. She somehow makes me enjoy reading crap! Who told her it was crap anyway??? It's great CRAP. Her blog skin's fun too! Just don't put your finger on it!

Kathleen Elim: Kathleen, Kate, Katy, Kathy, Kat is one of my steadfast friends. She comments on my posts even when I don't get back to her as quickly as she deserves. I like being one of her raindrops! It's a bit of an enigma since she is so blue sky, stable, wise and wonderful!

Lindsey Hasford: Lindsey is so full of excitement and young fresh ideas and always manages to put her best foot forward. She's "in the pink" just like her picture and her blog skin shows that same bright and vivid personality!

Jeff Belonger: Jeff is the money man and he shows it! I visit and read his advice and reports often. When I have a question that's mortgage related off I go to visit Jeff. His blog skin just sings CHA-CHING.

Vanessa Stalets: Vanessa's blog skin has a sleek, classy look just as she seems to be. After seeing enough of her photos I feel as if I know her. Her blog skin reflects her sensitivity and creative side. And, Vanessa it doesn't make me think of broccoli!

Liz Carter: Liz shows us her professional side with a flair! Her blog skin is attractive and a good example of a "staged blog". Her template design works well with her fun posts as well as her professional posts. Nice.

Rebecca Levenson: Rebecca's blog skin is as colorful on screen as her written words. I totally got the rain drops on the flowers Rebecca. Very good. Very nice. For a woman that stays as busy as you it's amazing you have time for this!  This reflects the power of your voice.

Christina Williams: Christina's blog skin is lovely! Just not nearly as lovely as Christina. She shares her heart here in the rain and continues to boost our egos and moods. She has me in her corner! Take a look at her blog skin, smiling face and you'll be hooked.

Debra A Brooks: Debra's blog skin speaks volumes. Bubbles...hum. Air-head? Maybe? She does sell by the water so we ought to give her an atta girl for that one. Deb shows us that one doesn't have to be perfect to give it a try! Please ignore the mistakes...

This is just a tip of the iceberg of the members that should be mentioned here! Go to Kathleen Elim's post for more members that have jumped "out of the box" to give us a peek at their inner workings!

Give her an inch and she'll take the tub...

Yes she will. I was thinking about this today.

One of the first little houses we sold for an elderly gentlemen was just empty. Now, when I say empty, I mean it was lucky to have walls.

He was a big hearted gentleman that just could no longer take care of his home. He was moving in with one of his daughters in the last days of his life. He knew that life on this earth was short but he wanted to sell the home and realize enough money to leave to his children.

As he was moving, to the extent that he could, he hired a maid.He hired her to clean everything he just couldn't get to. He boxed the few mementos he planned to carry with him and left the rest for the maid to take with her or distribute.

As he was leaving the maid to work on his home he told her, "I am leaving everything here behind. Please feel free to take home what you feel you can use and throw away the rest."

Boy did she take that seriously! When we walked into the little house there were no words to be spoken. The shock was severe.

She left nothing. I mean nothing. She took the sink, the light fixtures, the towel racks, the air conditioning units, the ceiling fans the appliances and whatever was not nailed down. She took some things that WERE nailed down.

We watched as his heart sank. We watched him search every corner with his eyes and watched them cloud up. We would have offered him a chair but...well, you know.

The gentleman cleared his throat, began to nod his head and slowly but surely a smile was crossing his face. "She must have needed that, he said with a lilt in his voice. How much you think we can get for this place?"

He saw no reason to discuss what happened as he had given her permission to take what she wanted.

We did sell the house but it was after his passing. When I think of generosity I think of this elderly gentleman looking pleased that the maid got what she wanted.

All we take with us is our knowledge and love.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER! FUN IN BANDERA...

FUN IN BANDERA...is what we had!

I wish we all could have had much more time together. Ricki Eichler and Judi Morgan really should be commended! What a wonderful job they did for the Active Rain crowd! It took a great deal of work and planning to pull this off Ladies! Thank you!  I just love you ladies...above and beyond AR!

I agreed with my husband when he said, "THAT Ricki has such an infectious smile...I sure do like her and Don!"

And Judi, you are so perky and real! Scott and I decided that you could cook for us any time! It was good to meet Ceil and Carl Winters too and Ceil I ate all the white chocolate covered strawberries! Yum.Liz

Marchel

Marchel Peterson is just as lovely as her Localism Posts! We are getting over the excuses soon and we'll be meeting for lunch.   Liz Carter? Where do you get all that energy? You are like a firecracker on the 4th of July! I so enjoyed talking AR with you! Marchel and Liz are moderators for the Texas Real Estate Group! Join today.

Alan, Jason and Edward

Alan Kirkpatrick, "the" Jason Crouch and Edward Lui were with a small bunch of us that looked at a couple of Ricki's listings...

BTW, Tom Plant and I are going to write up a contract on the "big" house for later AR parties! More on that later.

These gentlemen are full of heart, fun, and family...the type of people you want to be around.

Pam, Jason, Tom and Jim

Tom (california/texas-trans) Plant!

Now, this is what Tom Plant looked like just about the entire time we were there. I understand Tom is considered the Active Rain Ambassador as he is very mobile and attends many functions.

I adore Tom. We had a great time together! His camera made me drool. He is a "semi-professional" photographer with "professional" written all over him!

To your left of the picture you will see Jason and his wife Pam visiting with Jem Woods! Jem and I didn't get to visit but a few minutes and he and wife and kids were off and gone! Next time Jim!

Edward, Jason and Tom

We all nibbled throughout the day. Ricki, Judi and Don had a full spread of veggies, chips, dips, salsa, tea, sodas and more desserts than I've ever seen in one place.

The recreational center we claimed was just beautiful. Large with all natural woods,  fireplace, lots of windows and tables and chairs.

The entire Ponderosa RV park can be yours for a mere pittance of 1.2 million. Any takers?

Just let me know...you'll need representation against that Ricki Eichler Agent!

Tom, Jason, Don, Pam and Judi

Jason had just found Tom Plant on the floor!

Jason, you really take things in stride...he might have given me a heart attack!

It was a great surprise held close to the vest of Judi Morgan!

You see Don Eichler, Ricki's husband in the middle there.

house on water in Bandera

This is the shot of the house we want to buy for Active Rain get-togethers!

It's Ricki's listing and I fell in love.

It sits on one acre on a bluff next to an emerald green stream.

Now, here's my plan.....

If all 80,000 of us members donated $10.00 (mailed directly to me) we could all hold undivided interest in the house and we would have a place to party!!

Whaddaya think? Send money anyway.

Tom and treeWhere's Tom Plant?

Is he still on the floor?

Oh, I see him!

He's in front of the Oak Tree that sits in front our house!

Dancing with the Stars? Travolta was a long time ago,.,.,No Real Estate here...

I'm doing this post for my husband...and the rest of my reading public that hasn't seen Saturday Night Live. The seventies were a very different time. Our UNITED STATES was just working through the Viet Nam war and youth was looking for a reason to "be."  We were trying to figure out where we fit in the grand scheme of the world.

Life wasn't easy although we all tried to make it be that way. We held close to the meaning of the earth, nature, goodness and a world of euphoria that just didn't exist. One of our greatest attempts to be "okay", or different or "ourselves" was the era of disco.

Many of the songs from that era were awesome and reached to the soul.  But this one is different. This one is "the" moment of change. This one is the epitomy of perfect that today we are still stiving for.

This one takes me to Sonic Drive Inn and corn dogs, silver earrings, best friends and Saturday night. This one, if you are old enough will take you back too. If you are too young then watch and learn....

...you will find your present from our past.

This one dance that Travolta "lived" spoke volumns of the "new" age of freedom and thinking and beliefs. ENJOY.

And, BTW, you don't see this on Dancing with the stars!!!!   This is a classic.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN HUNTSVILLE TEXAS...

What do you get when you combine a quaint little town amongst hills, tall trees, tailored streets and an Active square? Then you mix in a little...okay, a lot of History, President Sam Houston of the Republic of Texas, a few prisons, massive expanse of State Owned land with grazing horses, cattle, crops and black and white striped workers herded by Prison Guards on horses? Then add up to 17,000 youth at any given time walking Sam Houston State Universities beautiful campus, winning football games, featuring Arts and Academics and is one of the fasted growing schools in Texas?

You get the one and only...

The city began about 1836, when Pleasant and Ephraim Gray opened a trading post on the site. Our land was hilly virgin land with wildlife, tall pines and natural streams galore! Ephraim Gray became first postmaster in 1837, naming it after his former home town, Huntsville in Madison County, Alabama. (Ironically, "Madison County" is also the name of an adjacent Texas County.)
Huntsville became the home of Sam Houston, who served as President of the Republic of Texas, Governor of the State of Texas, Governor of Tennessee, U.S. Senator, and Tennessee congressman. General Houston led the Texas Army in the Battle of San Jacinto into the victory of the Texas Revolution. Houston has been noted for his life among the Cherokees of Tennessee, and - near the end of his life - for his opposition to the American Civil War, a position which was a very unpopular in his day.
Huntsville Texas feels like its History! Walking the square you will stop and read markers talking about how Sam Houston and his friends would sit and play checkers or whittle the day away while watching the comings and goings of the townspeople. Sam Houston State University shares the same area (across the street) from Houston's original homestead. The Sam Houston Museum is built next to his Homestead's and provides a day of History, fun and great sight seeing.

Huntsville was also the home of Samuel Walker Houston(1864-1945), a prominent African-American pioneer in the field of education. He was born into slavery on February 12, 1864, to Joshua Houston, a slave owned by Sam Houston. Samuel W. Houston founded the Galilee Community School in 1907, which later became known as the Houstonian Normal and Industrial Institute, in Walker County, Texas.

In 1995, on the grounds of the old Samuel W. Houston Elementary School, the Huntsville Independent School District.

Along with the Huntsville Arts Commission and the high school's Ex-Students Association, commissioned the creation of The Dreamers, a monument to underscore the contributions made by the black community in the growth and development of Huntsville and Walker County.

This is one of the most impressive pieces I have ever seen.

The detail is gorgeous and worth seeing. Huntsville is filled with artistic pieces from many very talented artists.
The faces are created to depict the progression of time, beginning with the youth at the bottom, middle aged at the middle and the elders at top.
Beautiful piece!
Mr. Dan Phillips is a well known "local" gentleman here in Huntsville. Dan is well known for his "unconventional, eclectic" designs of homes. Dan's philosophy is that each and every person in this world deserves a home. Dan actually puts his money where his mouth is too. He collects remnants, old boards, nails, broken glass, chipped concrete, cracked wood and any other "creative" piece of leftover building material and waves his magic hands. Up comes a home fit to be enjoyed by anyone at a cost of at least 1/2 the local average price. Dan gleans pleasure from teaching an Eco Friendly lesson to all that want a home. Dan Phillips is making his own history for our little town of Huntsville, Texas. Please watch this video and enjoy...
I was lucky enough to grow up in the small town of Huntsville Texas and I have many memories there. Our The WallsPrison system has always been a seed for jokes...I tell everyone that I grew up on the outside. Ha-ha.  I was going to share a story with you that is special to me and not something everyone would get to do!
Back in 19...uh, well, what the heck...1969, I was assigned a special "writing" report for English class. I had a boyfriend, and his father was on the Board of Directors of The Texas Prison System and he was in charge here in Huntsville.
Downtown Huntsville, is the Prison Unit called "The Walls" and it houses the worst of the worst criminals. Many of these prisoners are on death row.
Due to my connection I was allowed to interview a man that was serving life in prison right there at the walls. He was very old but full of colorful information!
This man (I will call him George) was serving time consecutively with Clyde Barrow.

Clyde met, and fell in love with Bonnie just after being thrown into one of Huntsville's prison units. He was a part of the labor crew
digging out white rock from one of our quarries.
George knew Clyde personally and gave me incredible insights into his character and attitudes.
George told me a girlfriend was sending Clyde many a letter, love letters at times and angry letters at other times. Clyde was known to be a real Casanova.

Clyde shared a great deal of personal information with the general cell mates which later posed as bad news for Clyde.
He shared a bit too much and some of the details were later used against him in the locating of CW Moss, one of their right hand men.
 Bonnie and Clyde
Although Clyde grew up in a poor home, he never really acclimated to hard work. George told me about the day when they were on Quarry duty. The sun was hot, the men were weak and tired and Clyde took his shovel and chopped off a couple of his toes from his own foot.
George said that the day Clyde got back to his cell from his medical stay in the prison was the very day Clyde's news was delivered to his cell.  Clyde had been officially released from TDC and would be going home. History tells us that was the beginning, and the end of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.
George said he believed the "higher ups" had planned it that way just to punish Clyde............................................could be.
